All About End Citizens Unite And The Man Who Started It All

In January 2008, James Bopp was laughed out of court. He had gone before a three-judge panel in Washington, DC to argue that Citizens United, a nonprofit organization, should be allowed to air a clip about Hillary. The Federal Election Commission argued that it could not air the movie as it amounted to a political advertisement, which did not identify who paid for it.

However, that was the last time anyone was laughing about the matter in court. Two years later, the matter was settled at the Supreme Court where most of Bopp’s arguments were accepted. It forever changed 100 years of campaign finance practices in the US. The ruling henceforth declared the corporations were persons, and they could contribute directly to an election campaign.

The decision was the culmination of many years of work by Bopp to degrade finance regulations within the United States. However, he is not done. Bopp is tirelessly working to dismantle any kind of campaign finance regulation within the US. He has many cases in court, all of which look weak at the fore. However, the world has by now learned not to laugh at him.

He Targets Both State and Federal Laws

James Bopp is at the helm of a broad campaign designed to chip away at finance regulations at both the state and federal level. He works by using small organizations to widen loopholes in the law that make it easy for a corporation to donate directly to campaigns.

However, Bopp prefers to think that he is defending the First Amendment. He thus views his work as defending free speech by all, including corporations. In his course, he has had some unique allies. They have included the ACLU, the Committee for Freedom of the Press, and many others.

What His opponents Think

Those who oppose him say that Bopp essentially used the first Amendment to create a Wild West system where anyone can splurge on a campaign. If all the cases Bopp is pursuing succeed, they could eliminate laws on spending caps, and even allow donors to hide from public view.

End Citizen United; The Group that is challenging the Supreme Court Decision

End Citizens United is a PAC that is focused on eliminating Bopp’s victory at the Supreme Court. Thus far, the group has been able to collect over $4 million during the first three months of this year. By the 2018 Midterm elections, it is estimated that it will have over $35 in its purse. Most of its contributions come from small donors, who would like to see the end of big money in American politics. Thus far, over 100,000 people have donated to its course, which shows people are genuinely interested in bringing an end to the SCOTUS decision.
