Cassio Audi Remains Important To Heavy Metal Fans Almost Three Decades After Walking Away From His Musical Career

The status of the band Viper in the heavy metal community of the world can be seen in the fact one of the pioneers of the genre in Brazil is still revered almost three decades after stepping away from his successful career. Viper are often credited with being the first Brazilian heavy metal band to find international acclaim and commercial success through their first two albums, “Soldiers of Sunrise” and “Theatre of Fate”; drummer Cassio Audi appeared on the debut album of Viper and was an influential figure in creating the initial sound of a band heavily influenced by the British heavy metal imports of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The mid-1980s were a period of time when the creative freedom afforded by the end of Brazil’s military junta in the late 1970s allowed the youth of the nation to find their voice in many different musical genres. Cassio Audi was part of the vanguard of the development of Brazilian heavy metal begun through the vast amounts of British heavy metal bands arriving in Brazil in the early 1980s. Legendary British heavy metal bands such as Saxon and Iron Maiden were undoubtedly an influence on the young Cassio Audi when he joined his friends in forming the band, Viper at the same time as fellow Brazilian metal pioneers Sepultura were finding their feet in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte in 1984.

Viper remains an active touring and recording band headed by some of the original members but Cassio Audi’s own heavy metal career was shortlived after lasting from 1985 until 1989 when he returned to his studies to achieve an MBA in Business Administration at Sao Paulo University. The drumming completed by Cassio Audi on the 1987 release “Soldiers of Sunrise” remains among the best reviewed in the history of Brazilian heavy metal.
