Dr. Shiva Gopah Vashishta is a board certified neurologist. Neurologists diagnose and treat many disorders of the nervous system, brain, spinal cord, and muscles. The involuntary nervous system mostly controls the heart and lungs but also controls other organs as well. Neurologists treat multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, stroke, dementia, headaches, and epilepsy. ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)is one of the diseases of the involuntary nervous system that weakens muscles by causing nerve cells to break down. There is currently no cure for ALS though neurologists are working on finding one. Myopathy is a muscular disease that is treated by neurologists. Myopathy is considered by a musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disease. Myopathy results in muscular weakness due to muscle fibers that do not function properly. Peripheral neuropathy is another condition neurologists treat. A common cause of this condition is diabetes. Peripheral neuropathy can also be due to an infection or exposure to a toxin. Patients complain of a pins and needles feeling in their hands and feet and overall weakness when they are suffering from this.

Neurologists like Dr. Shiva Gopal Vashishta will use EMG (Electromyography) testing to detect neuromuscular abnormalities by measuring muscle response to a nerve’s stimulation. Electrodes (small needles) are inserted into the muscle, through the skin, during this test.
